The term Oil Field Chemistry refers to:

  • the chemical transformations provoked in oil field fluids by the processes of producing, treating, transporting and refining those fluids;
  • the problems arising from these chemical transformations;
  • the use of specialty and commodity chemicals to mitigate those problems to manageable levels

The most common and familiar challenges arising from changes in Oil Field Chemistry include:

  • the need for phase separation in solids-liquid suspensions, liquid-liquid emulsions and gas-liquid foams;
  • corrosion of carbon steel goods via a wide range of mechanisms and throughout drilling, production, transportation and refining processes;
  • solids deposition from oil (waxes and asphaltenes), water (mineral scales) and gas (hydrates);
  • contamination of process streams and reservoirs as a result of microbiological activity;

While petroleum companies experience some or most of the above problems in almost every oil and gas operation, there are many more Chemistry; issues that are more esoteric, not universal and generally less well characterised and understood.

We provide consultancy services to help with all aspects of Oil Field Chemistry, typically adding value to the company operations by helping to debottleneck processes, prevent flow disruptions and breaches of system integrity.

We analyse system problems arising from chemistry issues and work with all stakeholders to develop cost-effective improvements often leading to increased production, higher safety standards, reduced environmental impact and extended equipment operating lifetimes. Such profit-enhancing operational modifications can arise only from the deep system understanding developed by our consultants over many decades in the oil field.
